Meet Surge, a 7-year-old dolphin fromMarineland Surge Marineland Dolphin Adventure. Nicknamed "Surgio" and "Surgy," this fin-tastic guy was born just days before Hurricane Matthew in 2016. We chatted with Surge via a translator—one of his dedicated trainers—to learn more about him.

When were you born/how old are you?

I was born on September 29, 2016 at Marineland Dolphin Adventure and I am seven years old.

What’s a typical day look like for you?

A typical day for me is full of sun and fun!

What’s your favorite meal?

My favorite meal is fish!

Do you have a favorite activity or “toy?”

My favorite activity is playing with my trainers. My favorite toy is a ring.

How can someone tell you apart physically from your friends at Marineland Dolphin Adventure?

My dorsal fin! Every dolphin's dorsal fin is different, like a fingerprint. This is one of the best ways to tell us apart.

What makes you unique, personality-wise, from your fellow dolphins at Marineland Dolphin Adventure?

I can always figure out a fun game to play with my fellow dolphin friends.

How do you communicate with your fellow dolphins?

With clicks and whistles from my blowhole on my head! My best dolphin friend is Casique, but she might tell you otherwise.

How do you communicate with your trainers?

They use hand signals, like sign language, to communicate with me.

Is it true that you sleep with one eye open? Why?

Yes! I sleep with one eye open. Dolphins are called uni-hemispheric resters, meaning we sleep with half of our brain while the other half is still awake.

What’s something silly or funny that you’ve done?

Everything I do is silly and fun! My absolute favorite pastime is throwing my toys out of the water.
