Describe how you got your start in surfing?

I started surfing when I was around 13 years old. As a kid, I loved bodyboarding, but I was always in awe of the surfers out there. I knew from a young age that surfing was something I had to do.

Have you competed in surfing?

When I was a teen, I competed in a few surf contests, including Volcom contests. Competing made me realize that I’m more of a “soul surfer” than a competitive one. My husband, however, was a serious competitive surfer through his teens and twenties. He occasionally helps with our advanced lessons when his schedule allows. Surfing eventually turned into a business when I started sharing my passion with friends and others eager to learn. And it just grew from there!

What do you love about surfing?

Surfing has a certain magic to it. When you dip into the ocean, you feel a connection with nature that’s hard to put into words. I love the sensation of dancing on waves, and being in the present moment. In those moments, nothing else matters—no phone, no distractions, just you and nature.

What makes surfing in Flagler County so unique?

Flagler is unique for its beautiful orange sand made from coquina rock, and its small-town charm. The waves here offer something for every level, depending on the conditions. The laid-back vibe, combined with great waves, makes surfing in Flagler County truly special.

Why did you decide to start Flagler Surf School?

With over 20 years of experience running a successful surf school in California and hosting surf retreats in Hawaii, starting Flagler Surf School felt like the next natural step—especially after noticing there were no other surf schools in the area. Once my twins started school, I was able to return to teaching after a bit of break while raising them. I was excited to get back to doing what I love—sharing the joy of surfing with others!

What’s a typical lesson like with Flagler Surf School?

A typical lesson begins with a focus on safety, which is always our number one priority. We start with a 15-20 minute lesson on the beach to cover the basics: learning about the surfboard, paddling techniques, getting past waves, the “pop-up” motion, and how to fall safely. Then, we take what we've learned and head into the water to practice. It's a lot of fun and a great way to learn! Our lessons are designed for whether you're a first-time surfer or looking to improve your technique. 6 Secret Beaches

What ages do you teach?

We teach all ages! The youngest student we've had was just 2 years old, and the oldest was 80. (Not including my own twins who were 10 months old when we first put them on surfboards!) We also provide lessons for special needs students and adapt our lessons to fit each person's unique needs and abilities.

Do students need to bring their own surfboards? What do you supply?

No need to bring your own surfboard! We provide all the equipment you’ll need, including surfboards, leashes, and wetsuits for the winter months.

If potential clients are nervous about trying surfing, what would you say to encourage them to try the sport/book a lesson?

If you’re feeling nervous, don’t worry! Just have fun and do your best. Surfing is all about enjoying the ride and embracing the learning process. Everyone starts somewhere, and you’ll have a great time while learning at your own pace. Just remember, every surfer started at the beginning, and you’re already doing something amazing by trying!
