Flagler Parks Offer Boating Access and Serve as Destinations
There are a significant number of State, county and municipal parks in Flagler County. If adjacent to rivers or the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), most offer canoe/kayak launch sites and several provide boat launch ramps. Boaters who keep their boats on trailers, will need to search for convenient boat launch sites. When found, boaters launch there boats, pull their vehicle and trailer to designated parking locations at the site and head out on the ICW. Rarely do they spend time the park. It is worth noting that a park can serve not only as a location to launch your boat, but as a boating destination.
My wife and I, when cruising, often pack a lunch and head to one of these parks where we can tie the boat to a dock provided for temporary stops and enjoy our lunch at the park. It is important to navigate carefully into the park area from the ICW (follow the channel markers noting the proper approach to temporary dockage). It can be shallow so watch your depth-sounder carefully. Even though we frequently stop at a waterfront restaurant for lunch, packing our lunch and stopping to enjoy it at one of these fine parks is an enjoyable experience. There are many photo opportunities so I recommend you bring a digital camera or use your cellphone camera.
Three websites that provide detailed park information are: www.flaglercounty.org; www.floridastateparks.org; and www.palmcoastgov.com/parks. If you are not familiar with these parks, it may be worthwhile visiting them by car in advance to your boat visit to get familiar with their layout. Most launch ramps will safely accommodate canoes, kayaks, personal watercraft and boats (length limits apply).
